Access to Justice Conference to be held 1 – 2 October 2021

The Chief Justice Frank Clarke’s Working Group on Access to Justice shall host a Zoom conference on Access to Justice next Friday and Saturday 1st & 2nd October. This shall feature a number of keynote speakers as well as workshops covering various different aspects of access to justice.

The conference aims to “identify the strands of access to justice which will form the basis of the work of the Working Group on Access to Justice. It will put access to justice in its contextual framework and provide an opportunity for groups and individuals with unmet needs to engage in a conversation about what is needed to make improvements.”

Speakers on the Friday (which runs from 9am - 12.15pm) include Chief Justice Frank Clarke, Minister for Justice Heather Humphreys, Síofra O’Leary, Judge at the European Court on Human Rights, Trevor C.W Farrow of the Canadian Forum on Civil Justice and CEO of the Courts Service, Angela Denning.

The Saturday (8.50am - 2pm), which shall see FLAC Chief Executive Eilis Barry provide an introductory overview of unmet legal needs, wiall consist of workshops covering the following topics (these workshops shall feature a number of experts and representatives from a wide variety of groups and organisations):

  • Awareness and Information;
  • Access to Justice in Environmental Matters;
  • Legal Community Outreach: advancing access to justice through education and awareness;
  • Accessibility of Courts: court procedures and legal representation;
  • Access to Legal Services for People in Poverty and Disadvantaged Groups;
  • Equal Treatment in the Court Process.
