ECHR: Commissioner Hammarberg welcomes the decision of the Irish government to recognise transgender woman Dr Lydia Foy as female

Commissioner Hammarberg recently made a comment acknowledging the Irish government's withdrawal of its appeal to the Supreme Court in the case brought by Dr. Lydia Foy. To view a previous report by the PILA Bulletin on this case, please click here.


Commissioner Hammarberg welcomed the forthcoming legislation to be introduced in the area and recommend that representatives of the transgender community as well as other experts be represented in the committee. He also added that it could become a good model for other states seeking to improve legal protection for transgendered people.
