  • FLAC: Success of Dr Lydia Foy helped break down gender stere
31 August 2010

FLAC: Success of Dr Lydia Foy helped break down gender stereotypes and showed how ECHR Act 2003 could be used to defend rights not adequately protected in Constitution and existing laws

In his article "Transgender Woman wins 13-year Legal Battle", published in the latest edition of "Just News" (the newsletter of The Committee on the Administration of Justice) FLAC's Senior Solicitor Michael Farrell describes some of the difficulties faced during Dr. Lydia Foy's battle to have her gender identity recognized. He explains how the European Convention on Human Rights Act, 2003 was used to show how Irish law was in fact incompatible with the ECHR and that the Irish government would have to change the law in the area. It would seem that the general public is supportive of these developments which would indicate that people are more tolerant of gender issue than previously thought.
